Bachelor's Degree Programme in Business Informatics and Digital Transformation

Studying Business Informatics and Digital Transformation* means becoming an expert in the worlds of IT and Business Management and building innovative bridges between the two fields.

Understanding and implementing digitalisation

The careful balance of technical and business expertise in this bachelor engineering degree programme will allow you to solve complex problems that result from the rapidly advancing process of digitalisation in companies. You will acquire a well-founded understanding of applied software engineering and development while gaining skills in digital business management. As an interface manager you will then be able to efficiently drive forward the development of IT products and the provision of IT services.

To this end, your studies will engage you in the fields of business information, informatics and databases, software design, internet technologies, IT management & security, digitalisation of the value-added chain, information economics, business management and business functions, corporate activity and social/communication skills.

Aside from direct entry into a career, there is also the possibility that you will wish to extend your university education with one of the following master’s programmes at FH Salzburg:

• Master’s in Information Technology & Systems Management
• Master's in Business Management

A further Master’s programme in the field of Business Informatics is also being planned.

Curriculum Structure Business Informatics and Digital Transformation

The Curriculum for the Bachelor Programme in Business Information Systems and Digital Transfor-mation* is grounded in an engineering approach and is orientated towards technical, economic and social aspects. You will learn to think and act as a business person and above all to develop and implement the necessary technologies. In addition, you will acquire social/communication skills.

There is a particular focus on the fields of

•  Software engineering & development and
•  Digital Business Management

In the field of Software Engineering & Development you will be in a position to plan and implement software solutions. You will also understand how to document and manage applications systems and to adapt existing or new IT solutions and IT-supported processes to the requirements of internal and external customers. The basis for these skills is a solid understanding of software systems and new technologies (e.g. blockchain technology). For example, during the course of your study, you will learn and test out ways to progress in verifiable and quality-assured steps, using agile software de-velopment. On the basis of these specialist skills, you will learn to appreciate the importance of in-formation technologies in achieving business goals. In addition, you will devote yourself to the sub-ject of security, which is becoming ever more important in the whole field of IT. You will learn to de-sign network infrastructures and will tackle the subject of IT security solutions.

In the field of Digital Business Management you will acquire the technical skills that will allow you to implement digital transformation in internal company processes. A further area of focus will be the potential for IT-supported management of relationships with customers, suppliers and strategic part-ners. You will understand essential business processes and learn to recognise opportunities and as-sess risks. You will thus gain a systematic understanding of the company as an ever-changing organ-isation. The major themes here are strategic management, economic behaviour models, logistics pro-cesses and legal frameworks. In addition, you will learn about digital transformation as a means of understanding new business models and of finding market opportunities for new (digital) products. Using the digital marketing strategies acquired during your studies, you will develop a market- and customer-orientated mindset for your company.
In line with the slogan ‘Understanding and implementing digitalisation’, in the fifth semester there will be a further element of attention in the form of a practice-orientated IT project. As part of this, you will take a practical approach to applying business-related tasks to the topics of IT requirements and IT-supported processes. Unconventional and innovative approaches, and the development of proto-types, make the IT project an exciting teaching format. The findings of your project will be reflected in your first bachelor thesis.

With these experiences, you will be ideally equipped to tackle your professional placement in the sixth semester and to successfully progress into your working life.
