The Salzburg Center for Smart Materials (SCSM) is a research centre funded by the EU as part of the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE), which brings together the most important research institutions in the field of materials science in the province of Salzburg.
The aim of the centre is to bundle the competencies of all partners and thus build up expertise and know-how for all areas of the materials of the future. ‘Functionalisation’ deals with the adaptation and adjustment of the properties of existing materials. Digitalisation’ deals with the production of materials with a particular focus on simple processing and interaction with computers in order to meet the needs of Industry 4.0. The ‘biogenic’ aspect focuses on the production of sustainable materials that are easy to recycle after use or can be reused elsewhere.
A total of 3 senior researchers (one per partner institution) and 5 - 6 doctoral students are involved in the project. They all work together to exchange expertise and experience and with the aim of developing new materials based on two different modules. Module 1 deals with the development of lightweight, bio-based materials, while Module 2 focuses on the functionalisation of these materials and surfaces.
