Aspiration, basic concepts and classification of ethics: philosophy, ethics and morals; duties, goals and boundaries of ethics, general ethics, applied ethics; convergence of the relation between occupational therapy and ethics: professionalism and ethics; occupational therapy practice versus theory and philosophy; values, norms, guidelines, examples and exercises.

Upon completion of this module students know and describe the most important diseases in infants, children and adolescents. They know causes, most common abnormal development and related treatment methods. They know about the lifeworld of children and adolescents, especially about issues causing crises. They know about responsibilities in neuropaediatrics as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. They apply their knowledge of how to establish contact and bonding to treatment examples of children, their parents and caregivers. They compare different approaches of psychology, sociology and paedagogics and relate them to their work as occupational therapists. Based on their knowledge of sociology (family- and adolescent sociology), psychology and paedagogics theories (systems theory, Gestalt theory, etc.) students are competent to guide children and their families in occupational therapy treatment as well as collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.

Module description:

Upon completion of this module students have an understanding of their role as occupational therapists in neuropaediatrics as well as child and adolescent psychiatry: with the help of client case studies they are able to identify diagnoses applying specific tests / assessments, write therapy goals as well as develop, explain and document treatment plans. They know relevant diagnoses as well as appropriate and effective therapy options. They relate content to other areas of practice and are able to comprise this when planning therapy. They see their clients in a holistic way and consider personal / individual factors as well as the environment when planning therapy. They plan occupation-based therapy with the aim of participation. They recognise and describe occupation-based normal development of people on a physical, psychological, sociocultural, emotional and cognitive level. They know occupational therapy treatment methods, therapy materials and methods relevant for multiple impairments, as well as aural and visual impairments in children / adolescents. They know possibilities of implementing occupational therapy treatment in schools using an inclusive approach.

They combine their knowledge from the different paths of competence acquisition and demonstrate this when working in a multidisciplinary setting. They enhance their skills for reasoning their approach, explaining professional and inter-professional correlations, the ability to develop and present solutions within a team. By doing so they therefore prove their competence in the roles of experts, communicators, teachers and team members.
