As they do so parents or key contact persons are given appropriate instruction as needed incorporating information on the advantages of breastfeeding during counseling of the family. The regular course of development is thereby distinguished from an irregular course. The significance of differing perceptions and and language use as a basis for professional work can be described and implemented. Students are capable of in depth discussion of professionally relevant aspects as well as influencing measures and supportive requirements of developmental psychology. Students are capable of listing current nutritional recommendations while breastfeeding as well as age-appropriate nutritional recommendations for children up to age one, of sensitively giving counselling well-grounded in theory during follow-up care and to convey such information in a client-oriented manner. Graduates are able to present in-depth knowledge of the postpartum period, the newborn and the associated diagnoses and midwifery interventions and to present and justify them in an evidence-based manner. They are able to examine newborns in a differentiated manner and provide professional support in the first weeks of life and to train and support the carers in a needs-based manner. In the area of obstetrics salutophysiological care is further consolidated. Increasingly unusual and complicated births are cared for in close cooperation with the responsible midwife. Knowledge and skills are furthered through work on the maternity ward, standard situations are dealt with autonomously and students become increasingly more competent in complex situations.

Lecture content:

Founding of a practice, public relations, introduction to accounting, tax information, commercial social insurance, credit agreements and property register

Learning Outcomes:

Graduates are able to discuss the historical and expected future development of out-of-hospital obstetrics in out-of-hospital obstetrics in Austria on the basis of scientific findings. Challenges and opportunities can be presented in detail. Graduates are able to carry out the midwifery therapy process in out-of-hospital obstetrics. They can independently assess and treat birth injuries. The graduates are able to analyse and critically examine developments related to the profession.

Module description:

Students are capable of autonomously performing therapeutic procedures of midwifery. They can name the jurisdiction of associated professions and through multi-professional cooperation can take necessary measures under inclusion of communicative and organisational skills. Should students work as freelance midwifes they are capable of developing, designing and implementing their work according to organisational and business management principles. Completion of this course familiarizes students with the most important legal regulations in the profession and enables them to appropriately implement this knowledge in practice especially in regard to interdisciplinary cooperation.

Lecture content:

Introduction to law. Overview of social security legislation, focal point of patient rights, contract law including contract governing medical treatment, liability law, employment law (MTD Austrian medical technical service statutes and Austrian HebG midwife statutes).

Students are capable of autonomously performing therapeutic procedures of midwifery. They can underline the presentation with different media (posters, newspaper articles). They are able to utilise scientific findings and phenomena for professional and scientific development. Module description:

Students are capable of adapting to the demands of lifelong learning and a professional obligation to further education and training under the aspect of the continual need to assimilate medical and social science findings in order to guarantee professional quality and contribute to the advancement of the midwife profession. They are capable of selecting and implementing relevant scientific methods of research and are capable of processing the compiled data to generate answers to research questions. They can subsequently harness the scientific findings and phenomenon in order to advance professional and scientific development. Students are capable of managing the planning, performing and analysing individually selected topics. In so doing they focus on flawless empirical work using an appropriate method, on the utilization of sound scientific principles with intense concentration on the professional implementation possibilities of such information. Acting as a constructive critic for team members, students are able to reflect on the work of others and utilize advantageous group processes for scientific work.

Lecture content:

In the elective professional practical training the relevant skills needed for a future career path or to compose the bachelor thesis can be acquired. Students can increasingly assume autonomous care of both woman giving birth and key persons accompanying them during the entire delivery process including the possible development of complications. In close collaboration with the midwife and in cooperation with an interdisciplinary team skills are practiced and reflected upon. Autonomously assuming their role as a midwife under supervision is supported during practical training as well as via supervision counselling and future autonomous work is prepared for.

Learning Outcomes:

Graduates are able to carry out the midwifery therapy process in accordance with professional and scientific knowledge and experience. They are able to analyse and reflect on measures and independently develop solutions appropriate to the situation. They are able to act in accordance with professional, economic and ecological principles. Graduates acquire routine and competence in coping with the complex day-to-day work of a midwife. Special, individually required or desired additional competences can be acquired through the targeted selection of the elective work placement.

Lecture content:

Practical training is prepared for, monitored and followed up on. Individual training and discussions are held as well as supervision in small groups. Transfer days aim at deepening the student’s learning experience and easing assimilation and placement. To this purpose case studies supplied by the students are professionally studied and discussed in the form of supervision. The roles one played and experiences made are likewise covered.
