Skills are practiced, personal boundaries of proficiency are taken note of and consequences appropriate to the situation are taken. Module description:
Completion of this course enables students to describe their knowledge of the period following childbirth, of newborns including respective diagnoses and midwife interventions and to support their arguments with evidence-based justifications. They are capable of differentiating in their examination of newborns and professionally attending to their development in the first weeks of life. As they do so parents or key contact persons are given appropriate instruction as needed incorporating information on the advantages of breastfeeding during counseling of the family. The regular course of development is thereby distinguished from an irregular course. The significance of differing perceptions and and language use as a basis for professional work can be described and implemented. Students are capable of in depth discussion of professionally relevant aspects as well as influencing measures and supportive requirements of developmental psychology. Students are capable of listing current nutritional recommendations while breastfeeding as well as age-appropriate nutritional recommendations for children up to age one, of sensitively giving counselling well-grounded in theory during follow-up care and to convey such information in a client-oriented manner. The students can give systematic and evidence-based counselling to assist during breastfeeding.

The intrauterine development of the child and the respective prenatal psychological concepts can be discussed. Students gain competency in carrying out a client centered and individual-based patient history interview, identifying problems that cannot be clearly classified and inferring initial midwife diagnoses. Students learn to debate the importance of consulting expenctant families in an empathetic and culturally sensitive manner. Students can increasingly assume autonomous care of both woman giving birth and key persons accompanying them during the entire delivery process including the possible development of complications. In close collaboration with the midwife and in cooperation with an interdisciplinary team skills are practiced and reflected upon.
